Start them young on competitive level

Last January 15, I headed the first leg of junior qualifiers for national triathlon program. Ten young boys attended the run clinic. Boys were previously selected from last year's sprint races (Supertri series, YMCA aquathlon and NAGTs). All are aspiring triathletes! Triathlon in the country gains more popularity among executive age-groupers, training camp here and there, races here and abroad. For 2011 my program's priority would be the youth, get them involve and open their minds that they are the hope of Philippine sports. It really caught my attention, when PSC chairman Jolly Gomez mentioned that only 5% of our youth population is into sports, 6% into drugs... so what's the proportion of 5% of our youths are competitive - enough to compete in asian level? I don't think so... The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will revive Batang Sports and National games, this will add community awareness and youth involvement. We'll make sure triathlon will be included ...
