Camp for young athletes

3rd leg of National Youth developmental triathlon camp was held in Cagayan de Oro.  There were 25 youngster ages 9yrs to 15yrs participated the week long camp. The event was part of the national grass-root program leading to qualify 2014 Youth Olympics, China. Both kids and parents were excited and motivated. Most of the young athletes comes from swimming clubs and very competitive, though the tri-camp was something new to them, their motivation made them endure throughout the camp. Triathlon in this region is fast-growing.  If I recall it right, there were already three or four organized age-group triathlon club. The local host, Misamis oriental triathlon group, had managed to organized an aquathlon race culminating the camp – excellent entry event to start your triathlon. I’m looking forward to hold another camp before the year ends.

Hope in Palawan

My first out-of-town trip this year - Puerto Princessa Palawan! It's been more than a year since my last Bike for Hope ride, thanks Pia for inviting me, I was so excited riding with new friends. Working back with her ever supportive and friendly staff was encouraging. Supporting BFH allowed me to meet new people and took me off from my coaching hat.  I  was privileged to design this years' event jersey.  Other than coaching and organizing events, designing logos & shirts was my business years back. (I still do few designing for my friends.) It was truly an awesome experience. I felt like a real tourist during that weekend. Biking, trail running, open-water swimming, and not to mention big time eating! "ang lungkot talaga, kaka-inip!" :) One event that weekend struck my heart as a coach was the Younghusbands' football clinic. Its been 30yrs since my football days (not known to many). I played football during my entire high school, represented Central Luzo...

Girls in my life

Start them young on competitive level

Last January 15, I headed the first leg of junior qualifiers for national triathlon program. Ten young boys attended the run clinic. Boys were previously selected from last year's sprint races (Supertri series, YMCA aquathlon and NAGTs). All are aspiring triathletes! Triathlon in the country gains more popularity among executive age-groupers, training camp here and there, races here and abroad. For 2011 my program's priority would be the youth, get them involve and open their minds that they are the hope of Philippine sports. It really caught my attention, when PSC chairman Jolly Gomez mentioned that only 5% of our youth population is into sports, 6% into drugs... so what's the proportion of 5% of our youths are competitive - enough to compete in asian level? I don't think so... The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will revive Batang Sports and National games, this will add community awareness and youth involvement. We'll make sure triathlon will be included ...
